Ten minutes into the second half, the Jaspers gained one goal back. The Eagles tried hard to play on the offensive for the rest of the game and prevailed. With 80 minutes on the clock, Brasher scored again. At the 86-minute mark, Brasher scored for a third time, resulting in a hat trick for the Maryland native midfielder.

Another team with a blistering service game was Arkansas-Little Rock. In sweeping Manhattan College, the Trojans knocked in 18 aces. Leading the way was Melissa Soares, who had a career-high eight aces. Anita Bucur and Lenka Melicharkova each had four.

The Seton Hall volleyball team defeated Manhattan College, 3-2 (29-31, 30-32, 30-24, 30-23, 15-13), to win the Jasper Invitational.

Manhattan College Jasper Invitational

VOLLEYBALL

Seton Hall rallies past UALR Seton Hall rallied to beat UALR in a five-game match at the Manhattan College Jasper Invitational in Riverdale, N. Y. Seton Hall won 30-25, 14-30, 33-35, 30-28, 15-12. Amila Barakovic led UALR (1-3 ) with 30 kills and 13 digs. Williams Baptist sweeps Central Baptist Skyla Talley made 11 kills and served three aces in leading Williams Baptist over Central Baptist 30-13, 30-18, 30-8 in Walnut Ridge. Jodi Stepp led Williams Baptist (1-0 ) in assists with 22 while Casey Jo Schatzley added 18. Amanda Haralson also made 11 kills while Laura Jardeen posted a team-high 12 digs.

Manhattan loses to Connecticut (Aug 25, 2007 at Storrs, Conn.)

Manhattan was led by Diane Strutner who recorded eight kills and 10 digs. Jaspers' setter, Alyssa Getzel dished out 23 assists while teammate Ashley Watson added 10 digs, respectively.

A senior at Manhattan College this spring, Fitzpatrick 22, batted .325 with a school-record 18 home runs

ROSTER ADDITIONS: The Pittsburgh Pirates have added two players to the Spikes roster. INF Jon Fitzpatrick and RHP Kyle McPherson were called up from Bradenton (A) of the Gulf Coast League. Fitzpatrick, a non-drafted free agent sign this June is a first baseman who has made sporadic starts in the outfield for Manger Tom Prince. He displayed good power numbers for the Baby Buccos as he hit .236 in 42 games, with nine home runs with 36 RBIs in 127 at-bats. As a senior at Manhattan College this spring, Fitzpatrick 22, batted .325 with a school-record 18 home runs and 66 RBIs in 200 at-bats. A 6-foot-4, right-handed batter, he was the school's all-time leader in hits (216), home runs (35) and RBIs (177) and was a second-team NCAA All-American as a senior. His career on-base percentage was .393, as he walked 86 times against 95 strikeouts.

Cruz isn't the only recent Cardinal draftee off to an impressive start. A 30th-round choice out of Manhattan College, Derba is hitting .355 in 26 games with the Swing since being promoted from short-season Class-A Batavia. While the 5-10, 190-pounder hit a modest .267 in 19 games at Batavia, he has two homers, 13 RBI and an eye-catching 1.017 OPS (on-base plus slugging percentage) for Quad Cities. In his last eight games, he has produced a pair of three-hit games to go with a four-hit performance Friday against Dayton.

The awful record didn't appall John Ciano. In fact, he embraced it.

When Ciano, a goalkeeper at Manhattan College who starred at Syosset High School, was planning to transfer from Central Connecticut State following his freshman year, he chose Manhattan, a school that had not won a game the year before.

It was an interesting decision, but one that Ciano, now a junior at Manhattan, is satisfied with, even though the Jaspers went 3-16 last season.
